Mason Greenwood's potential return has started to create internal problems at Manchester United with their staff considering quitting or going on a strike, reported The Athletic on Friday.

United released a statement on Wednesday (August 16) saying that the club have completed their investigation but no decision has been made.

This statement by the club started rumours that Greenwood’s return is near which has created internal problems at the club.

The decision on the 21-year-old’s future has caused unhappiness inside the club and it is reported that multiple meetings involving some senior figures at the club and staff have already taken place.

Some of the members feel “ashamed” by the club’s decision to bring Greenwood back which has ultimately led to rumours of staff striking or quitting should the 21-year-old return, the report added.

However, all these extreme measures remain hypothetical until the club announce their final decision on the forward.

Another issue that was pointed out by the club’s staff was how they are supposed to justify Greenwood’s return to their friends and family.

It must be noted that Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape after his then-girlfriend Harriet Robson posted her pictures and an audio file on social media.

The footballer was then immediately suspended from training and matches by United and last played for United against West Ham in January last year.

Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with the player, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its FIFA 22 game following his arrest.

But in February 2023, charges of attempted rape and assault against Mason Greenwood were dropped by the prosecutor.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light were factors in their decision to stop the case against the 21-year-old.
